What is a Mammogram and How to Get One?

A mammogram is an X‐ray image of your breasts. Mammograms can help physicians detect early signs of malignant growths, commonly cancer. Getting regular mammograms can help you live a longer and healthier life. If you're preparing to have a mammogram, it helps to keep the following in mind.

  • Mammograms are recommended based on age and risk as an annual procedure for women between the ages of 40 and 74. However, it's advisable to discuss your risk and testing schedule with your doctor each year.
  • The procedure for a mammogram is simple. You'll stand in front of an X‐ray machine with one breast placed on a special clear plate. A second plate is placed above your breast. The two plates hold your breast still as the technician takes X‐ray images of it on all sides.
  • It's common to feel slight discomfort during a mammogram because of the pressure that the two plates pressing on the breasts can cause. It's possible to feel some pain, but it should be brief. A full mammogram takes just a couple of minutes to complete. Your radiologist will also help ease the discomfort during the procedure.
  • After a mammogram, the radiologist will examine the images to determine whether they're usable or if you need to have X‐rays taken again.
  • The results of your mammogram may be ready after a few days. However, you may be contacted earlier if there's an issue with the clarity of your X‐ray results.
  • You may need to go for a second mammogram to confirm the results of the first mammogram. It's advisable to go for regular mammograms to make it easier to compare your results over time.
